Nintendo has lowered its Switch production target for the current fiscal year by 20 percent due to ongoing semiconductor shortages.
As reported by Nikkei Asia, the company had initially planned to produce 30 million consoles by March 31, 2022, but has now downwardly revised that figure to 24 million.
Back in September, Toshiba warned that semiconductor shortages could affect console production for at least another year, explaining that “supply chains will remain very tight” over the next 12 months.
Prior to that, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors that Switch production was “more uncertain” as a result of that disruption, but that the company was still hoping to sell 25.5 million consoles before the end of the fiscal year.
Furukawa, however, admitted that sales plan was “based on the premise that we can secure the materials necessary for production,” so it’s possible the company will revise that target in next earnings release, which is due to be published on November 4, 2021.
Nintendo recently launched the Switch OLED model, and also has two other consoles in the Switch family including the original Switch and the handheld-only Switch Lite.
